Don´t let fear keep you away

(from the dental chair)

If your hands begin to sweat and your heart begins to pound only by thinking about visiting the dentist, you are not alone. Most individuals experiment some type of anxiety towards dentistry. However, 10 to 15% of the population suffers from great dental anxiety, that has been associated to behaviours like avoiding consults and with adverse results in dental health. It is important to look for ways of shedding this dental fear because when the dentist discovers early problems in your mouth, this minimizes discomfort, time and cost. Here are some ideas:

The first step is identifying where does the fear come from. According to a survey by the AAP (American Academy of Periodontology), periodontists report that the two most common origins for fear in patients are family and friends or bad experiences more that 10 years ago. Talk about your fears with your family, friends and your dentist. In many cases, the fears are not realistic due to the advances in dentistry.
Afterwards, look for ways to feel more in control of your experience. Ask your periodontist to explain any procedure he(she) might be considering. Knowledge can give you power. Your periodontist can also explain options for pain and stress control techiniques, such as drugs, anesthesia, sedation and relaxation techniques that can make your treatment virtually pain free.

Choose the time of your appointments when you are not in a hurry or are stressed by other situations. If you feel tense while sitting in the dental chair, try relaxation techniques, such as rythmic breathing or visualizing calming sceneries, like relaxing at the beach or try distracting yourself by listening to music or watching a video.

Once the appointment is over, congratulate yourself for your courage and give yourself a special prize.

It is most important to remember that your dentist and periodontist are your allies. Ask for their help to overcome your fear without embarrasment of talking about it and clear any doubts you might have.
