Diagnostics
Your dentist has determined
that your gums need special treatment and has referred you to a periodontist.
Periodontists are dentists that specialize in the diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of gum diseases. By referring you to a periodontist,
your dentist is showing a strong commitment to optimal dental treatment.
To help you understand why is treatment necessary and how to save
your teeth, this information will answer some of the most common questions
about periodontal therapy.
What is periodontal
disease?
Periodontal disease is
the major cause of approximately 70% of adult tooth loss, affecting
3 out of 4 persons at some stage of their lives. The main cause of
gum disease is bacterial plaque, a colorless sticky film that constantly
forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed, it hardens into a rough
and porous deposit called calculus or "tartar". Toxins or
"poisons" that bacteria produce in plaque, irritate gums
and turn them red, swollen and easily bleed. As disease progresses,
toxins destroy teeth supporting tissues, forming pockets that fill
with more plaque. Bone supporting the teeth can be permanently damaged.
If left untreated, teeth can become loose and eventually lost. Meticulous
removal of plaque with the toothbrush and floss, and professional
cleanings can minimize the risks of gum diseases However, other factors
can affect your gums health, such as hereditary factors, stress, smoking,
diabetes and pregnancy.

Who is a periodontist?
Periodontists have had
extensive and advanced training in the treatment of periodontal diseases,
a minimum of three years after dental school. As specialists, they
dedicate their time, energy and abilities to help people that need
periodontal treatment. Periodontics is one of the 9 specialties recognized
by the American Dental Association.
What involves periodontal
disesase?
After reviewing your medical
and dental history, the periodontist will examine your gums, teeth
and mouth. This exam will include looking at the color and firmness
of your gums, studying which teeth are loose and checking how much
gum tissue has been lost. If necessary, radiographs will be taken
to evaluate the teeth´s bone support. After taking the necessary
information, the periodontist will discuss with you your mouth´s
condition and will suggest the best treatment plan that will help
you regain your oral health.
