crown lengthening
There are periodontal
procedures that prepare the area for restorative and esthetic dentistry
and/or to improve the gum margin´s esthetics.
You may have asked
your periodontist about procedures to improve a "gummy smile"
because your teeth seem short. Your teeth may have the appropiate
length, but are covered with a lot of gum tissue. To correct this,
the periodontist does a crown lenghtening. During this procedure,
the excess gum and bone are recontoured to expose more the natural
tooth. It can be done to one tooth, to level the gum margins, or to
several teeth to uncover a wide natural smile.

Your dentist or
periodontist may also recommend a crown lenghtening to make a restorative
or cosmetic procedure possible. Maybe the tooth has caries, is fractured
under the gum margin or does not have enough structure above the gums
to make a restoration like a crown or bridge. The crown lengthening
adjusts the gum and bone levels to expose more of the tooth to be
able to be restored.
What are the
benefits of this procedure?
A crown lengthening
procedure is performed either to improve function or esthetics; patients
often receive both benefits.
A beautiful smile and good periodontal health - are keys to be able
to smile, eat and speak with comfort and confidence.
