surgical
- soft tissue grafts
There
are periodontal procedures to stop additional dental problems and
gum recession, and/or to improve esthetics at the gum margin.
The
exposed dental roots are the results of gum recession. Maybe you want
to improve your smile by covering one or more of these roots that
make your teeth look longer. Or, maybe the appearance of these areas
is not a concern, but they bother you because the exposed roots are
sensitive to hot or cold food or liquids.
Your
gums may have recession for various reasons, including aggresive tooth-brushing
or periodontal disease. It may be that you do not control the cause
of recession, but before treatment your periodontist will help you
identify the factors that contribute to the problem. Once these contributing
factors have been controlled, a procedure of soft tissue graft will
repair the defect and help prevent recession and additional bone loss.
Soft
tissue grafts are used to cover roots or to develop gum tissue that
does not exist due to excessive recession. During this procedure,
your periodontist takes gum tissue from your palate or other donor
site to cover the exposed root. This can be done in one or more teeth
to even the gum margin and reduce sensitivity.

What
are the benefits of this procedure?
A
soft tissue graft may reduce additional recession and bone loss. In
some cases, it may cover exposed roots to protect them against dental
caries; this may reduce tooth sensitivity and improve your smile´s
esthetics. A new and beautiful smile and good periodontal health -
are the keys for you to smile, eat and speak with comfort and confidence.
