You´ve been diagnosed
with periodontal disease and your periodontist has recommended periodontal
surgery. Like many patients, you may have certain questions. It is
important you find the answers to your questions before surgery, because
knowledge will help you participate actively in the decisions about
your health. You´ll be closer to having a happy smile and a
healthy mouth.
Why do I need periodontal
surgery?
You need periodontal surgery
because your periodontist has determined that the tissues around your
teeth are not healthy and will not heal with non-surgical treatment.
Will it hurt?
New treatment modalities
with refined techniques can be comfortably performed in the dental
office. Improvements in medications, local anesthetics, pain and anxiety
control, and, in some cases, conscious sedation are available to make
your treatment more pleasant and comfortable.
How long will it take
to heal?
It is important to follow
the doctor´s instructions. Patients can generally enjoy their
normal activities the next day. Talk to your periodontist about any
special post-operative consideration you might have, like diet, exercise
or supplementary medications. This will help minimize interrupting
your daily activities.
